International Non-Binary People’s Day 2020

by Benjamin Ohene

July 14th is International Non-Binary People’s Day!

We believe that in order to treat all human beings with dignity, we need to constantly learn and expand our understanding of the world in all its diversity. At Believe Out Loud, we are committed to challenging ourselves and our audience to see and embrace all of our siblings in their divine uniqueness. Today’s holiday is an opportunity to learn more about what it means to be “non-binary.”

Non-binary, also known as genderqueer, genderfluid and “enby,” is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine nor feminine‍ —‌ identities that are outside of the gender binary of man and woman. The pronouns for a non-binary person are they/them. Fittingly, International Non-Binary People’s Day is observed annually on July 14th because it is the precise midpoint between International Women’s Day and International Men’s Day.

Non-binary people may identify as having two or more genders, having no gender, or transitioning between genders. A non-binary person may also have a fluctuating gender identity, and may have physical characteristics that appear to be completely masculine or feminine, but still identify as non-binary.
