No offense, but this sounds No offense, but this sounds like the optimism of a true non-Catholic. Will the Catholic Church change and revitalize? Yes, I think it will in many needed ways. However, I do not count LGBT equality among them. I think that will take a saint.

Pope Francis is absolutely Pope Francis is absolutely NOT a “simple man.” Simplicity and situational humility are two very different things. This essay demonstrates you lack of understanding of the Roman church, the Society of Jesus, and indeed, Pope Francis himself. He is a VERY complex man, well-educated, a savvy administrator, and a cleric who led his part of the church–and made interesting, highly political choices, during tumultuous theological and political times. Your lack of knowledge and naivete about the theo-political realities of Rome weaken your opinion, for that is what this piece is; mere opinion substantiated by nothing.

As I have understood it from As I have understood it from my readings, while Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis was opposed to Gay Marriage and adoption by gays: but not opposed to legalized civil unions. I interpret that as meaning he has some understanding of the LGBT community, although his position on marriage is very much in-lline with his beliefs as a Roman Catholic and Jesuit.
To quote a friend of mine who is a RC Dominican nun, “if the Holy Spirit guided a group of ‘old men’ to elect him Pope, maybe the Holy Spirit will guide Francis to a more centerist view.”
