Ramadan and Zakat
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is observed worldwide by those of the Muslim faith. The Fast of Ramadan lasts the entire month, which can be 29 or 30 days, depending on sightings of the moon.
Ramadan is a time when Muslims concentrate on their faith and spend less time on the concerns of their everyday lives. It is a time of worship and contemplation.
Though Ramadan will be experienced differently around the world this year, it is still a time to worship and give thanks.
Prayer, fasting, community and achieving clarity in the mind are at the forefront of the month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is also a time to keep those who are less fortunate in mind. During Iftar, the meal that breaks the daily fast after sunset, it is common practice to provide sustenance and charities to the homeless and to those who are struggling. This is called Zakat and it is one of the five pillars of Islam.
- Profession of Faith (shahada)
- Prayer (salat)
- Charity (zakat)
- Fasting (sawm)
- Pilgrimage (hajj)
Providing aid to those in need is especially essential during these times.
As Ramadan commences, concentrate on bettering yourself, but keep in mind those who are without. This time is for individual and group growth mentally and spiritually.
May Allah be with you!
Ramadan Mubarak!
